What is a botanical skin butter?

Raw shea butter, golden plant oil, and dried calendula petals on cream linen

Butter, cream, or lotion: what is the difference?

Lotions are mostly water, so they feel light and absorb fast. Creams have less water and more oil, so they feel richer. Skin butters have very little or no water. They are made mostly of plant butters and oils, so they are the richest of the three.

Because a butter is so concentrated, you only need a little. A small amount, warmed in your fingertips, covers a lot of skin.

Who a skin butter suits best

Skin butters suit skin that feels tight, rough, or easily stressed. That includes hands that are washed often, skin exposed to heat, cold, or wind, and areas like elbows, knees, and heels.

If your skin is oily or you prefer a weightless feel, use a butter only on the driest areas, or just at night.

How to get the most from a skin butter

Apply it to clean skin that is still slightly damp. Warm a small amount between your fingertips first so it spreads easily. Press it in, then smooth it over the skin. Give it a minute to settle before you get dressed.
